Nero OEM, commonly called just Nero, is an optical disc burning program for both Microsoft Windows and Linux provided by Nero AG, formerly Ahead Software.

It is basically employed for writing data into CDs/DVDs also known as "Burning". Now the program is usually a part of various software suites—such as Nero 6.6 —most of which also bears the designation Nero. The Nero 6 package contains Nero StartSmart, Nero Express 6, Nero BackItUp, Nero SoundTrax, Nero Image Drive, Nero Burning ROM 6, Nero Cover Designer, and Nero Wave Editor.

1. Nero BackItUp for backup of file systems or whole disks.
2. Nero Burning ROM is an optical disc writing program.
3. Nero BurnRights allows host Administrator to assign required drive access to users.
4. Nero CoverDesigner -is used to design CD covers.
5. Nero ImageDrive for mounting virtual CDs.
6. Nero Wave Editor for editing audio files.
7. Nero StartSmart displays a menu of operations available as soon as a blank optical disc is inserted. Also places a menu icon on the Windows Start tool bar

OEM stands for "original equipment manufacturer" and OEM software is a phrase that refers to software that is sold to computer builders and hardware manufacturers (OEMs) in large quantities, for the purpose of bundling with computer hardware. A limited-functionality version of Nero Burning ROM is also distributed as Nero Express, mainly aimed at the casual market. It has simplified, stream-lined menus presumably for a less computer-savvy audience. Nero works with a number of optical disc image formats, including the common ISO image and Nero's proprietary NRG file format.

Nero 6.6 have added Lightscribe support. LightScribe is an optical disc recording technology that utilizes specially coated recordable CD and DVD media to produce laser-etched labels with text or graphics, as opposed to stick-on labels and printable discs. The purpose of LightScribe is to allow users to create direct-to-disc labels (as opposed to stick-on labels), using their optical disc writer. Special discs and a compatible disc writer are required. Before or after burning data to the read-side of the disc, the user simply turns the medium over and inserts it with the label side down. The drive's laser then etches into the label side in such a way that an image is produced.

Nero provides writing sppeds from 4x (600kb/s) to 52x (7800kb/s) depending on the quality of media used for burning. Hence, the time for burning varies depending on speed and size of files to be written. Till 650 MB is the precribed limit of burning but overburning till 700Mb is possible.

Pros

  • CD/DVD overburning is supported. The Nero package contains some nice tools, such as access/seek times calculator, system information viewer. You should be able to do transfer rate testing, DAE quality evaluation, and to view CPU usage and burst rates. You can also control the each drive's speed or you can create CD/DVD labels and covers. Nero 6.6 supports for the first time burning short Lead Outs. Thus one can save up to 80 seconds when burning, having 12 more MB of storage

Cons

  • Higher the speed of writing, the quality and durability of written media decreases
